تتناول هذه الدراسة القار في مصر خلال العصرين البطلمي والروماني؛ حيث تبدأ بالمصطلحات اليونانية واللاتينية المرتبطة بالقار في كل من المصادر الأدبية والوثائق البردية، ثم تتطرّق إلى مصادر القار في مصر، سواءٌ أكانت داخلية أم خارجية، ثم أنواع القار، ووسائل قياس كل نوع. وتنتقل الدراسة بعد ذلك إلى استخدامات القار، باعتباره مادة مانعة للتسرّب في صناعة الجِرار الفخارية، وتبطين معاصر وأحواض النبيذ، وبناء وإصلاح السفن والقوارب، وآلات الري، بالإضافة إلى استخدامه في عمليات طلاء وتزيين المباني، وأخيرًا استخدامه في الوصفات الطبية والتحنيط. وتُختتم الدراسة بالحديث عن أسعار وتجارة القار.
Title: Pitch in Greco-Roman Egypt
Abstract: This paper investigates pitch in Greco-Roman Egypt. It starts with Greek and Latin terms associated with pitch, as mentioned in both literary sources and papyri. Afterwards, it traces sources of pitch in Egypt, whether internal or external. Then, the study tackles its types and the tools of measuring each type. Additionally, it studies the various uses of the pitch, as a sealant, in pottery manufacture, lining of presses and basins of wine, and construction and repair of ships, boats and irrigation machines, in addition to painting and decorating buildings, and finally its use in prescriptions and mummification. Lastly, the paper exposes the prices and trade of pitch.
