الإجهاض في مصر خلال العصر الروماني

الإجهاض هو فقدان الجنين إما بشكل متعمد أو غير متعمد في بعض الأحيان، وقد انتشر الإجهاض في مصر الرومانية لدرجة أنه وصل إلى حد الظاهرة الاجتماعية، وفي الوقت نفسه كان هناك بعض الأزواج والزوجات اللذين كانوا حريصون على إتمام عملية الحمل بنجاح، ولذلك لجأوا إلى نبوءات الإلهة باوبو المختصة بالولادة حتى لا يحدث إجهاض، وكان الإجهاض المتعمد يحدث بعدة وسائل، إما أن تضع الأم الحامل رباطًا ضاغطًا حول بطنها، أو تتناول الأعشاب التي ربما تتسبب في موت الجنين، أو تصوم عن الطعام والشراب لوقت طويل، أو تجلس فوق ثمار جوز الهند الساخنة، أو تصب الماء الساخن فوق بطنها، وكانت تلجأ إلى الإجهاض أحيانًا إذا تعرضت إلى جريمة اغتصاب أو لأنها ارتكبت الزنا فحملت طفلًا غير شرعيًا، أما الإجهاض غير المتعمد فكان يحدث إما عن طريق  مشاجرة الأم الحامل مع طرف آخر سواء بالأيدي أو بآلة حادة، أو لأنها تصاب  بأحد الأمراض التي تؤثر على حياة الجنين، أو لأنها تزوجت في سن مبكر فلم يكن الرحم قد اكتمل نموه أحيانًا، كما كان للإجهاض نتائج سلبية تؤدي بالأم إلى الخطر على حياتها أحيانًا، واستخدام الأجنة في عمل السحر الأسود لأذى الاخرين احيانًا، اما النتائج الإيجابية للإجهاض فتمثلت في دفن الاجنة تحت جدران المنازل باعتبارها أرواح طاهرة فتساعد على طرد الأرواح الشريرة.

Abortion also had negative results that lead the mother to danger to her life sometimes, and the use of fetuses in the work of black magic to harm others sometimes, while the positive results of abortion were represented in burying fetuses under the walls of houses as they are pure souls that help expel evil spirits.
